Cory Ryan Kasprzyk is a musician who writes, performs, and promotes work engaged in sustainability, nonintention, and veganism. His compositions extensively explore field recording and are grounded in found composition: relinquishing most musical decisions to observed environments. coryryancomposer.com
Cory’s new piece is a soundwalk, embellished by a mixed ensemble, that explores and amplifies a public space. Heightening our consideration for the world in which we share, we hear music determined by the performance space and the absence of others.
Cory Ryan Kasprzyk’s work focusses on environmentalism and interconnectivity, and he writes "for my piece I will challenge the role of performers and audience in an outdoor setting. When workers picket outside their place of employment, visual and sound is directed at those within the building. The public/audience passes, or may pause and observe for some time. What if this was brought to a musical context? The audience–observing for any length of time–sees a spectacle (happening? event?). It's not directed at them, but they can freely move to change their perspective. In preparation for the work, I will make recordings of the performance space. While standard techniques will capture what is traditionally heard, contact microphones and an ultrasonic detector will record beyond standard perspective. These recordings will be transcribed to serve directly as the material found in the score. This provides the aleatoric gestures ensemble members play. The material offers a literal copy of the field recordings, revealing the spectral features of the space, presented in spatial notation."
